Old Home Remedies
CAUTION: Please do NOT use these remedies. Never, never do it; I will not be held responsible. They can be harmful if not used right, and the use could result in an injury. Some of these were submitted to me by people that I do not know. This list is used as an historical purpose only.
1. Take Snake Roots and wash them. Cut them evenly and put in a jar of whiskey; take ½ teaspoon for colic.
2. Take Yellow Roots and wash them. Cut them evenly and put in a jar of whiskey; take ½ teaspoon for sore throat.
3. Asafetida is good for colic.
4. Take mullein leaves, beat them until juicy, and make a poultice to use for snake bites; will draw the poison out and reduce swelling; you can boil it to make tea and add sugar and drink for diarrhea.
5. Use lard and mix with snuff to make a paste; apply and cover for a boil.
6. Chew white oak bark for a headache.
7. Scrape a pine's inside white bark; add sugar and boil for cough syrup.
8. Use pine rosin and apply in a cut; used in place of stitches.
9. Boil corn fodder and make a tea; cures measles.
10. Take a red Sassafras bush's roots and cut them evenly. Make a tea and add sugar; put it in
refrigerator; will purify blood; also good for stomach ache.
11. Boil Magelia (sp?) Buds; cook in lard to make a salve to cure sores and bee stings.
12. Put three drops of kerosene on a teaspoon of sugar and take for three nights; cures tonsillitis/sore throat.
13. Boil a cup of strong coffee; put in lard and make a salve to use for poison oak/ivy.
14. Use Bluegrass roots to boil and make a tea; use as a laxative.
15. Boil poke salad and give the water to a dog; cures mange and used for worms.
16. Scrape an Irish Potato; use for sores.
17. Cure For Chicken Pox; lay in the chicken coop, have black chicken to fly over the person with the chicken pox.
18. For earache, put a couple drops of T-T in ear. It must be the person having trouble with ear's T-T.
19. Get soot off stove eye and apply to open wounds to stop bleeding. It will leave a blue place under the skin when it heals.
20. For asthma, wrap the person in the fat from a cow's spine.
21. Put sow bugs in buttermilk and drink for flu and upset stomach.
22. Boil Tread Salve Roots to make a tea to drink for diarrhea.
23. Scrape a few flakes of Fels Naptha or Octagon soap and add a little water to form a paste; use for relieving poison ivy.
24. Use prune juice and hot tea as a laxative.
25. Cut up an onion, put in grease in pan, add Vick's Salve and Camphorated Oil; cook until onion done. Put salve on two rags and slap to your front and back. Cover up. This will sweat the fever out.
26. Boil the bark of a peach tree to de worm family; have everyone drank the water.
27. Mix honey with lemon juice to take for coughing.
28. Wet tobacco and put on bee stings to take the sting out as well as the swelling.
29. Wet tea bags work well for any sort of toothaches and swelling.
30. Boil red oak bark and soak gouty joints.
