Obituary. Joseph W. Barton. By J.B. Weaver. On the 19th of March, God in His goodness saw fit to call from earth Joseph W. Barton, better known in his community six miles north of Lynn as “Uncle Joe,” who had been for more than ten years, the victim of that awful monster Rheumatism! “Uncle Joe” has been for more than a quarter of a century a member of the Missionary Baptist Church—a hero in the Master’s cause. He was a good zealous sober minded faithful member, and above all, a true Christian from the depths of his Soul. During his illness, he suffered the pains of death, perhaps a thousand times, yet, he had that patient Spirit so characteristics of martyrs, that made all who saw him realize that “Christ was in his Soul.” He was interred in the grave yard at old Sardis, on the 20th inst. While we realize that the earthly loss is but Heaven’s gain, yet we extend, to all the bereaved, our sympathies, in the hours of their trouble; and invoke the Benedictions of Heaven’s blessing on us all that we may all so live, that when we are called to go, we may, like the Apostle Paul, have that blessed assurance, and be able to say as he did: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.” [J.W. Barton, 20 Jan 1849 – 19 Mar 1907; buried Sardis Baptist Church No. 1 Cemetery]
